Schleicher introduces his video by declaring that learning is not a place, it is an activity. He is a true believer in PISA and builds a convincing argument for us to be believers too. He presents how PISA has truly globalized the field of education. In the 1960’s the US were first nation in terms of those whose students completed High School. By the 90’s US was 13th. This was not because standards had fallen in the US, but rather they had increased so much elsewhere.
It should also be remembered that measuring how long someone spends in school or what degree they have is not always a barometer of what they can actually do. In addition, better degrees do not necessarily mean better jobs and better lives.
As a result, to gain further insight into their research, PISA now looks at what a student can extrapolate from what they know. Educators enjoy and like to talk about equity. PISA wants to measure and ensure people have equal chances and opportunities.
Korea now pays teachers high salaries. This has seen an increase in standards. However, this also poses questions. The cost of education has increased by 35%, but the reality is that it is not necessarily any better.
Society is at a stage where we must believe that all children are capable of success. Similarly an environment must be developed and created where all teachers can work together. PISA statistics have shown what is possible and shown how countries can be compared to one another in a fair and impartial way. It also gives rise to questions when the level of government spending on education may be extremely high, yet the results are not necessarily reflected comparatively. Is the money being spent or invested in the right places? Are funds being wasted? While the intent may be positive, the reality and the return on investment may not necessarily be so. Pisa has shown what is possible in education. It has helped countries to see improvement is possible

If we help everyone, students, teachers, parents, there is no limit to our potential.
